One, two and now three powerful groups have denounced the Washington football team’s use of a disparaging slur: Redskins.
And today, a new radio advertisement released by the Oneida Indian Nation of New York cites those three reasons for why the slur should not be used. Members of Congress, The Washington Post’s editorial board, and the Washington City Council have joined Former Oakland Raider CEO, Amy Trask, and the Nation calling on the team to change its name.
As part of the Change the Mascot campaign, the Oneida Nation launched a third radio ad entitled “Inspire” which documents how leading voices in Washington, D.C., are calling on the team to abandon its use of the offensive slur.
The ad begins with a question. “What do the Washington City Council, some Members of Congress, The Washington Post and Native American groups have in common? All have asked to change the name of Washington's football team.”
And then, the spot reviews comments by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who said that people should “listen” to others and make sure that one person is not offended by the name, and Trask, who recently appeared on national television to deride the team’s management for using a word that she said was a “derogatory and disparaging slur.”
"As proud sponsors of the NFL, we are encouraged by how many leaders are standing up, speaking out and joining the grassroots effort to get the Washington team to do the right thing and change its name," said Oneida Indian Nation Representative Ray Halbritter in a news release.
"These leaders understand a very simple truth: marketing a team with a slur against Native peoples is unacceptable, and it is especially unacceptable when that team represents the nation's capital. The fact is we don't deserve to be treated as the target of such an epithet.”
In the new ad, which will air on KGMZ-FM, the flagship station of the Oakland Raiders, inspires listeners to go to ChangeTheMascot.org and “tell Washington’s team that Native peoples should not be disparaged.”
Other ads--there are three in total--will run each week in every city the Washington team visits. The text of the ad also quotes Halbritter, who voices the ad saying, “we should be treated as what we are: Americans.”
