The 2016 National Indian Education Association’s 47th Annual Convention & Trade Show will be held October 5 to 8 in Reno, Nevada at the Grand Sierra Resort & Casino.

A video below explains why NIEA chose Reno this year as the convention location:

This year’s convention will focus on “Building Education Nations Through Engaging Families, Educators, and Leaders,” and it will bring together Native students, educators, and advocates to work on improving the academic achievement of Native students.

“NIEA Convention creates a unique opportunity for educators, advocates, and tribal leaders to share successful teaching strategies and seek solutions for challenges faced in school systems,” says the NIEA website. “It is the only national forum in the United States which offers a meaningful space for Native education stakeholders to discuss, network, learn, and guide policy and advocacy.”

Participants can choose from more than 100 workshops focused on advancing educational programs for Native students. There will also be a Trade Show featuring Native art vendors from across the country, college and career opportunities, education resources, and chances to network.

This year NIEA offers its 3rd Annual College Showcase, allowing local students to interact with some 150 university exhibitors.

New this year, NIEA will offer a free Convention App to all attendees. The app was sponsored by the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians Tribal Council, and will provide up-to-date information, and will allow attendees to create a customized convention schedule, as well as network with other convention attendees.
