GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) ? The Blackfeet Tribe says it has signed a new oil and gas exploration deal for the reservation.
The tribe says it is seeking an increase in its production and that oil drilling is underway on the western edge of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.
Rosetta Resources Inc. of Houston announced in a news release Jan. 30 that it has signed a five-year exploration option with the tribe and the BIA to explore for oil on about 200,000 acres of the Alberton Basin.
The tribe says the revenue is needed.
The company plans to drill the first two exploratory wells this spring, seeking oil in the Bakken Formation.
New drilling technology made the Bakken Formation in Richland County one of the nation’s hottest oil exploration areas in recent years, although the focus has been shifting into North Dakota.
