The 60-year-old name of Central Michigan University Athletics is no longer the controversial subject it once was, yet dissension over the name "Chippewa" crops up from time to time. In August of 2005, the NCAA put Central Michigan University and 17 other schools on a list of institutions that "display hostile or abusive, racial, ethnic, national origin mascots, nicknames or imagery."
