With proper ceremony Aug. 8, conservationists and tribal officials commemorated the return of the first buffalo to the reservation since they were hunted to extinction 130 years ago. Defenders of Wildlife and the tribes, with the assistance of the Murr Family Foundation, returned 100 buffalo to the reservation. The welcome was at Turtle Mountain Buffalo pasture about 25 miles north of Poplar. These are the first buffalo to return to the Poplar River breaks in northeast Montana. Officials say restoration of the herds on the reservation promises significant economic, spiritual and environmental benefits to the tribes.
