Arkansas River Valley served as thoroughfare for the Trail of Tears

The Trail of Tears is known for the hardships five Native American tribes experienced as they made their way from as far east as Florida to Indian Territory in Oklahoma, said Daniel F. Littlefield, the Little Rock based Sequoyah Research Center director. Most students are taught misconceptions that have romanticized the trail, Littlefield said, adding Russellville and Dardanelle were bustling cities along the trail for the five “civilized” Native American tribes.
