Arizona pumice mine to close

A once-bustling northern Arizona pumice mine is closing now, a decade after the government bought it out amid public pressure. White Vulcan Mine was disliked by environmentalists and American Indian tribes in the area for its location at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, which are held sacred by the tribes. Proposals from the owners to expand the mine in the late 1990s triggered an environmental analysis and a campaign that ultimately put the Peaks off-limits to many forms of mining for the next 20 years.
