Agreement would include county deputization of Nation police

A plan to deputize members of the Oneida Nation Police Department under the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office is included in the proposed agreement between the Oneida Indian Nation and Oneida County. If the agreement is approved, Nation police would be able to arrest a non-Indian on Nation property and deliver him to the court in his home municipality, said Peter Carmen, an attorney and senior vice president for the Nation who oversees the police department.
