Achieving federally recognized tribe status difficult

The executive director of Alabama's Indian Affairs Commission said the members of the Cherokees of Alabama will likely have a long and difficult time gaining federal recognition or acknowledgment as an Indian tribe.
Eloise Josey said some Indian tribes in Alabama and in other states have been trying unsuccessfully for 20 years to get tribal recognition from the federal government.
