For the past several years, tribal and federal probation officer colleagues have discussed the need for a conference specifically for tribal probation officers.
Through much planning, dedication and commitment, the first Tribal Probation Officer Conference was held Aug. 11 – 13, at the University of New Mexico campus in Gallup.
Approximately 50 tribal probation officers from various tribes in the Four Corners area attended the conference that included presentations on supervising offenders with mental health needs, juvenile issues, identifying risks, addressing non-compliance, interviewing skills, defensive tactics, stress management and trends in Indian country.
The conference focused on the importance of collaboration as well as receiving uplifting and encouraging training.
One of many highlights was the defensive tactics training conducted by probation officers from the United States Probation Safety Team.
