A transparent tribal government


The Cherokee Nation has the most open, accountable government of any Indian tribe in the country, but it hasn’t always been this way. When I came into office more than 10 years ago, the Nation was reeling from cover-ups and controversy. In 1998, the Tribal Council, which has constitutional authority to pass the annual budget, could not get even simple accounting for that budget to know what money was being expended, or how.
