The Native American Boxing Council (NABC) has announced that the 2012 Native American Amateur Boxing Championships will take place July 5-7 at the Apache Gold Casino Resort in San Carlos, Arizona. The championships are sanctioned by USA Boxing, the national governing body for Olympic-style boxing.

The competition is open to both male and female fighters, with 10 weight classes each. Show bouts for both male and female will include bantam, junior, intermediate, junior Olympic seniors and novice divisions.

The NABC is paving the way for Indian country youth as they prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games in Riode Janeiro, Brazil. They are inviting the Indian community to support our youth in their quest to reach the highest pinnacles of indigenous stature at these Games. NABC believes it is well positioned to conduct an effective development program, which will enable selected Native American Boxers to become Olympic qualifiers for the 2016 Games.

”It is the hope of the NABC to provide Native American fighters a positive outlet to further their careers, promote tribal culture, and take pride in the recognition of their championships,” said Gerald Wofford, director of the NABC.

The competition in San Carlos will be held through an elimination system. For all categories, progressive rounds will be held with the loser of each bout automatically being eliminated. This will continue until two boxers are left to box for the championship round. Awards will be given to the finalist in each weight category.

It is the goal of NABC to be recognized by the national governing bodies of amateur boxing as a viable and respectable organization. They will be producing a national Native team to tour and compete on an international level, and will be also seeking representation at the Pan American Games.

The host hotel, Apache Gold Casino Resort, is owned and operated by the San Carlos Apache Nation and located 90 miles east of downtown Phoenix, near the town of Globe, Arizona. Special rates for competitors will be offered. For more information, contact the resort at 800-272-2438, ext. 3600 or visit
