11/25/08 - Navajos wrestle with government reform

Author:

The Navajo Nation’s executive and legislative branch continue to wrestle over proposals on how to usher in government reform, tribal officials said.

The 250,000-member tribe’s election administration notified Navajo president Joe Shirley, Jr. on Nov. 12 that a petition that proposed reducing their 88-member council stalled due to a lack of verified signatures. Shirley delivered the initiative petition to the election agency in late October. Another petition proposed a move to give Shirley line veto power.
