In a way, it is no longer part of Athens Township, Calhoun County or Michigan, but tribal leaders said Pine Creek Reservation still is part of the community.

The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi's 120-acre reservation in Athens Township was taken into federal trust this summer, making it an untaxable, sovereign nation — its own little country within the rural southern Calhoun County township. Federally recognized American Indian tribes were granted this right in treaties and laws dating back to the 1800s.
