Southwestern Community College’s fine arts instructor Rickie Wesbrooks works with Cherokee arts at the Oconaluftee Institute for Cultural Arts.

“When the students learn the basic heritage and skills then they have the foundation to create their own art,” he said.

“Their work can be informed by and based on Native American art but we’re allowing them the freedom to modernize and improvise,” he said. “After all, creativity is a strong part of Native American life.”
