James Ramos, Serrano and Cahuilla, declares victory in his bid for reelection to the California State Assembly, Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2022. He will return for a third term. Ramos is the first California Native American to be elected to this office. He will represent the newly redrawn District 45. It covers parts of southern California. Ho-Chunk filmmaker Sky Hopinka is among two Indigenous winners of the 2022 MacArthur Fellowships, an $800,000 award known as a Genius Grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Hopinka is a filmmaker, video artist and photographer who creates new forms of cinema that center Indigenous perspectives. Botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer, Citizen Band Potawatomi, was also awarded a 2022 fellowship.
